Finding Community Through Small Business: Our Journey in Mooresville, NC
In 2020, at the very onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, my family made a significant move from our native home in Tampa Bay area in Florida to the quieter, more close-knit community of Mooresville, NC. Like many families during this time, we found ourselves facing not just the challenges of a new environment, but also the profound isolation brought on by the pandemic. This was particularly challenging for us, a family of inverted neurodivergent individuals who struggle with social anxiety yet yearn for a sense of community.
Our journey to connect with our new home has been a unique blend of our personal challenges and passions. Early on, we decided to channel our special interests into a small business, Niche & Nicknacks. This venture became a therapeutic outlet and a bridge to the community we longed to be a part of. While our business primarily operated online, the desire to engage face-to-face with our community remained a strong, albeit daunting, aspiration.
Our breakthrough came with the opportunity to participate in a local vendor event hosted by Crazy Cool Collectibles in Mooresville. Brad, the owner, generously opened his parking lot to anyone interested in setting up shop and sharing their merchandise. This event was nothing short of remarkable for us. It marked our inaugural foray into the local community, transitioning from virtual interactions to real-world connections.
The experience was exhilarating. My daughters and I had the chance to meet local artists and fellow small business owners. We engaged in conversations that were both enriching and encouraging, helping us to feel a part of something larger than our individual efforts. The kindness and support we received from Brad and the local community were heartwarming and reaffirming.
For my family, participating in this event was not just about business; it was about belonging. It was about overcoming our anxieties and stepping out of our comfort zones to embrace the community around us. The warmth and camaraderie we experienced were uplifting, reminding us of the importance of community connections, especially in challenging times.
The Crazy Cool Collectibles RAVE (Really Awesome Vendor Event) was more than a vendor fair for us - it was a gateway to community integration. It allowed us to see Mooresville not just as a place we live in but as a community we belong to. We are profoundly grateful for the opportunities and kindness extended to us, and we look forward to continuing to grow and connect with the wonderful people of Mooresville.
We also encourage you to explore and support the vibrant local businesses that make Downtown Mooresville special. From the nostalgic treasures at Crazy Cool Collectibles (plus arcade) to the literary wonders at Fred & June’s Bookstore, there’s something for everyone. Don’t miss out on the delicious offerings at Bae’s Burgers and Zanders Bistro, the unique provisions at NC Provisions Company, and the refreshing brews at Ghostface Brewing. The branding and artwork for Niche & Nicknacks and several of the RAVE ads were designed by artist/graphic designer www.emelartistry.com. These small businesses are the heartbeat of our community, and your support helps them thrive.
By sharing our story, we hope to encourage others who may face similar challenges to take that first step towards community engagement. Whether through a small business, a local event, or simply reaching out, the rewards of connection are immeasurable. Visit Downtown Mooresville and discover the charm and warmth of our community. For more information about small businesses beyond the downtown area, follow the Crazy Cool Collectible guy, Brad. He’ll for sure tell you where to go.
