Embracing Neurodiversity: A Journey of Self-Discovery

Embracing Neurodiversity: A Journey of Self-Discovery

As I sit down to write this, I find myself reflecting on the twists and turns of my life’s journey, particularly the recent discovery that I am neurodivergent. Diagnosed with mild autism in my mid-forties, this revelation has brought both clarity and a sense of empowerment to my identity.

What makes this journey even more profound is that it’s not just mine alone. I am a mother to two incredible young women, both of whom are neurodivergent themselves, navigating the unique challenges and gifts that come with ADHD and ASD. Our shared experiences have deepened our bond and illuminated the beauty of neurodiversity in all its forms.

For years, I struggled to fit into a world that seemed to operate on a different wavelength. Through masking, I managed to become a  successful professional, earning two master’s degrees. Yet, despite my academic achievements and professional acumen, social interactions remained a challenge. The world seemed to operate on a different frequency. Sensory overload became a frequent companion, leaving me feeling overwhelmed and drained. It wasn’t until I embarked on the path of self-discovery that I began to embrace my neurodivergent identity fully.

One of the joys that my daughters and I share is our love for niche interests, including K-pop music. Inspired by our passions and our neurodiversity, we decided to celebrate both by creating a small retail business called Niche & Nicknacks, drawing inspiration from one of our favorite K-pop groups, BTS. Currently operating online, we offer a curated selection of merchandise that reflects our eclectic taste. Our dream is to open a physical storefront in Mooresville, NC, within the year, where we can share our love for K-pop and neurodiversity with our community.

Throughout this journey, the song “The Truth Untold” by BTS with Steve Aoki
BTS - The Truth Untold (feat. Steve Aoki) MV Extended Version has been a constant source of comfort and inspiration. Its haunting melody and poignant lyrics resonate deeply with my experiences, capturing the essence of my journey to reveal my true self beneath the mask of conformity.

Here are some of the English lyrics that speak to me:

Bloomed in a garden of loneliness

A flower that resembles you

I wanted to give it to you

After I take off this foolish mask

But I know

I can’t do that forever

I have to hide

Because I’m a monster

I am afraid

I am shattered

I’m so afraid

That you will leave me again in the end

Once again I put on a mask and go to see you

The only thing I can do

In the garden

In this world

Is to bloom a pretty flower that resembles you

And to breathe as the me that  you know

But I still want you

I still want you

This journey has been one of acceptance, celebration, and empowerment but it has not been without uncertainty and fear. Together, we have learned to embrace our differences and find strength in our shared experiences. As we continue to navigate the ups and downs of life, we do so with hope and optimism, knowing that our neurodiversity is not a hindrance but a source of richness and resilience.

At Niche & Nicknacks, we are committed to creating an inclusive community where all individuals of neurodiversity or background are welcomed and valued. If you resonate with our story, we welcome you to connect and share your story, passions, and biases with us.
