K-pop Mom - The Saga
I was introduced to K-pop through my daughters and their cousins. Initially, I will admit I just simply found joy in their passion and excitement for the genre and got into the bops and beats occasionally, but did not start exploring until I saw the GOT7 “Stop stop it” music video. The opening with Jay B standing on the building got my attention. After that, every time my girls watched practice videos I would ask them to teach me the members. Jay B’s voice was always the most captivating to me but I was always fascinated by how all the members made such unique contributions to each project.
My oldest daughter was obsessed with BTS and every car ride was an opportunity for a fact dropping session. Our television was taken over by BTS dance practices, variety shows, and music videos and my living room was filled with sing-a-longs, dancing, and giggles - the sounds of joy. Even now when I think back on it, there is no sound that warms my heart more than the sounds of utter joy streaming from my children. When they got excited about BTS milestones or just wanted to share moments with me, I stopped to listen and be present as much as I possibly could.
BTS provided a uniquely immersive experience into their lives. They shared hope through their visible bond for each other but also allowed us to witness the struggles, pain, and failures along with their successes. They showed our kids real examples of ambition, endurance, sacrifice, and faithfulness. It may sound silly, but this immersion ignited my protective and proud momma side despite the fact that I did not know them personally. Now, I would gladly stand in front of these 7 kids (now grown men but will always be kids to a mom), and their Army to protect them from harm.
The purpose of this blog is to share one mom’s perspective on how k-pop (and other things) impacted the life of a small introverted family. I will discuss mental and physical health related topics, as well as real family struggles and successes. Most of all, I want to provide a voice of hope in what often seems hopeless. I will provide a “Trigger Warning” when topics get deep. Please note that I am not a licensed therapist nor certified professional on any of the topics discussed. I am just a mom with some life experiences that I am willing to share if it will provide a connection or light to just one other individual.
